Story: Jon Martello objectifies everything in his life: his apartment, his car, his family, his church, and, of course, women. His buddies even call him Don Jon because of his ability to pull "10s" every weekend without fail. Yet even the finest flings don't compare to the transcendent bliss he achieves alone in front of the computer Streaminging pornography. Dissatisfied, he embarks on a journey to find a more gratifying sex life, but ends up learning larger lessons of life and love through relationships with two very different women. Written bySophiaLB

Don Jon was very well-received in its regional premiere at theParamount Theatre during Austin's SXSW Film Festival. The film waswritten, directed and starred Joseph Gordon-Levitt. He did a reallyfine job for his writing and directorial debut, but he may have beentrying to do too much. The acting by Gordon-Levitt, Scarlett Johansson,Julianne Moore, Tony Danza, Glenne Headly, and Brie Larson is quitegood. I think it is Gordon-Levitt's script that leaves something to bedesired. His character Jon is a very successful ladies' man who is alsoheavily addicted to masturbating to internet porn – numerous timesdaily. Many people will find the film to be quite funny and enjoyable.However, the graphic use of porn will not be to everybody's taste andmay be off-putting to viewers – particularly female viewers. I'm alsowondering whether the extensive use of porn will lead to the MPAAgiving it the kiss-of-death NC-17 rather than an R rating.

JGL's script is well-intentioned and he is trying to make the pointthat many people become so self-absorbed that they lose the ability tointeract with others on a human level. Jon is deadened to real romanceby his reliance on porn. His girlfriend has an overly romanticized viewof relationships based on Streaminging too many romantic movies. They areboth so self-absorbed and selfish that they can't really build a realrelationship. Still, it was often difficult to figure out what JGL'spoint was and in many ways became clearer listening to him during theQ&A after the film. JGL is attempting to raise profound issues abouthuman relationships in the modern era, but he hasn't quite figured outhow to do that as a writer and director. I expect that he is going tobecome as fine a director and writer as he already is an actor. He hasa fine future ahead of him.

I saw this at a pre-screening for SXSW and I was really impressed.Joseph Gordon-Levitt really holds his own as a writer/director, and itwas nice to see him in a role I hadn't really considered him "right"for. Scarlett Johansen and Julianne Moore are both wonderful as well.Basically, you should see this if you get the chance. It's funny,charming, different, and tells a great story that ends up going in adirection I hadn't anticipated.

This movie basically tells the story of a young guido (Gordon-Levitt)who has a porn addiction and ends up in a relationship with ScarlettJohansen's character. One thing leads to another, blah blah blah....you'll see when you see it. I don't want to give too much away.

Anyway, yeah! Really good movie, great directorial debut, and a welltold story. I'd recommend this film.

Main character Jon is used to round up women from the disco. He alwayssucceeds in getting the one who received the highest marks from hisfriends. He has sex with his prey, seemingly enjoyed by both, but thereal satisfaction comes afterwards when Streaminging porn on his laptop.History repeats itself every week, each time with a new woman appointedby his friends as an attractive target. He knows this is not the properthing to do, and he makes a habit of dutifully confessing in church howmany times he had "intercourse out of wedlock". Each time his sins areforgiven after a standard penance of 10 Holy Mary's and 10 OurFather's.

A break through this routine seems imminent when he meets a veryattractive women, who is determined to turn him into a house trainedhusband. She even gets him to present her to his parents as hisfiancée. The parents applaud his choice. Only his sister sees that thisrelationship is heading nowhere, but no one listens (as seems standardoperating procedure in this household).

Only the last half hour was interesting and worth seeing. I suspectthat it must be my fault, because of the apparent fact that peoplearound me looked like enjoying themselves, with several laughs where Ifailed to see the humor in the scene at hand. I appreciate that thisfirst hour of the film is needed as context, but while waiting forsomething relevant to happen, the overload of (bleep) F-words andstereotypes did not help to pass the time. The latter was most apparentin his parent's house, where no one seems to listen (really listen) tothe other, where the father continuously Streaminges sport on TV, and moresuch things we also see in the daily soap opera.

The interesting part starts at the moment his self-appointed fiancéewants him to stop cleaning his house by himself, though he enjoys itand knows he is competent in this. But she insists, and considers thisa simple sacrifice, something that a man needs to do for a woman heloves as a matter of course. We observe some hesitation but he givesin, unknowingly that she has more such sacrifices on her sleeve. Thougheach seems trivial when considered separately, we gradually see these"sacrifices" sowing a few extra bits of doubt.

Near the end of the film she explains her philosophy that bringingsacrifices to a woman, is a natural thing to do for a man. Sheconsiders this a love test, so it seems, for her a matter of principle.When he objects that this is a bit one sided, she reacts baffled as ifshe does not understand what he is saying.

(***warning***spoiler ahead***) In the meantime he met a totallydifferent woman by accident, this time not harvested from an evening inthe disco, the latter being the place where he used to pick up womenand take them home to have sex, following by a wanking session beforethe laptop. Conversely, he has no sex with her initially. It is madevery clear that they come to a mutual understanding on other grounds.He confesses his porn addiction to her, and she helps him finding outwhy his wanking before a laptop screen is more satisfying than realsex. Eventually, the expected happy end comes about.

As said before, the first hour was a bit of a drag to me, though therest of the audience seemed to enjoy it and had several laughs where Ifailed to see the humor of the scene at hand. Yet, the story takes aninteresting turn in the last half hour. A second compensation may liein the casting and acting, both adding much to making this filmenjoyable to Streaming. Let me conclude with assuming that my problems withthe first hour are my fault, and won't probably apply to you as acandidate viewer of this film expecting entertainment. Given that thisfilm was part of the Panaroma Special section of the Berlinale 2013, Ican only assume that the festival programmers saw some quality in it,something that I cannot confirm after the fact.
