I seen 'Up in Smoke' years ago and have fond memories of the sillystoner jokes and the adult gags but i'm almost 50 and while I stillhave the memories for 'Smoke' this is a very poor attempt at cashing inon the well loved but very outdated franchise. It was great hearingCheech Marin and Tommy Chong rapping away using the old gags but therewas nothing else on offer. The animation was cheaply done and as I saidthe writing was basically lifted from mostly 'Up in Smoke' but alsofrom their other movies. There was one bit I found extremely funny butmostly the jokes were very tame and very old. Die hard fans might enjoygoing down memory lane but I really can't see new fans being made fromStreaminging Cheech and Chong do their old, tired, stuck in the pastroutines.
It's a shame really because I had hoped they were going to breath newlife into Cheech and Chong, making it suitable for a new generation butthis is way too tame for todays young adults who won't remember whenthis sort of stuff was cutting edge. Sadly it's only a very blunt edgethat's left.

'CHEECH & CHONG'S ANIMATED MOVIE': Four Stars (Out of Five)
Just in time for 4/20 the popular stoner comedy duo Cheech Marin andTommy Chong are back with their first movie together in 29 years (since1984's 'THE CORSICAN BROTHERS') and their first animated flick ever.It's really just a bunch of their old comedy skits (from their comedyalbums) done to animation. For fans of the duo it's nothing new reallybut I'm not that familiar with their work. It's embarrassing to admit,being a film nut, but I've never seen one of their film's all the waythrough (I've been meaning to go back and Streaming them for years now) andhave only seen pieces of them years ago. I've also never heard one oftheir albums so for me the material was all fresh and funny. Peoplethat know the classic stoner duo's material well might be disappointedthat it's all old stuff but I liked it and liked the film as well.
Cheech and Chong do all of the voices in the movie playing out bitsfrom their grammy winning comedy albums like "Dave's not here, man","Let's Make a Dope Deal" and "Sister Mary Elephant". It's all writtenby the duo and directed by Branden Chamers and Eric D. Chambers. Theskits are portrayed in a really 'old school' cartoon fashion (which ispretty cool in my opinion). The soundtrack also features nine new songsby Cheech & Chong.
The duo is legendary, so to some, this film lacking anything new (otherthan the music) might disappoint but it seems like it could still begood nostalgic fun. I loved the classic old fashioned animation and thecomedy was refreshingly different than other stoner flicks out thereright now. The comedy team is most famous for spoofing the stonerstereotype perfectly and has been criticized by some for perpetuatingit. Anyone nowadays should be educated enough to know that marijuanausers don't generally act like this in reality. It's an exaggeratedjoke, which happens to be really funny. I really enjoyed this movieeven if it has nothing new to offer; it was new to me.

These two young directors did an amazing job layering their routinesunder cartoons, which also lets them appeal to today's "much grosser,much more graphic" comedy sensibilities. Cheech & Chong's AnimatedMovie pairs classic routines like "Drive Inn" and "Sister MaryElephant" with colorful cartoons — and yes, animated Marin again wearsa belly shirt with confidence.Culled mostly from their first fouralbums on Lou Adler's Ode record label - Cheech & Chong, Big Bambu, LosCocinos and The Wedding Album - Animated Movie is a hoot. Cheech Marinand Tommy Chong voice all the characters, including Paco and Man,Herbie and Ralph (the dogs), Bob Bitchin, Laidback Lenny, RightonWashington, Sister Mary Elephant, Ashley Roachclip, Alice Bowie andSgt. Stedanko. For those of a certain age and disposition,cannabis-comedy routines such as "Dave's Not Here" and the game-showparody "Let's Make a Dope Deal" will bring back fond memories--if theyhaven't gone up on smoke. I loved it!!!
