Plot: A hard-partying high school senior's philosophy on life changes when he meets the not-so-typical "nice girl." Full summary » |  »

Story: Sutter Keely lives in the now. It's a good place for him. A high school senior, charming and self-possessed, he's the life of the party, loves his job at a men's clothing store, and has no plans for the future. A budding alcoholic, he's never far from his supersized, whiskey-fortified thirst-master cup. But after being dumped by his girlfriend, Sutter gets drunk and wakes up on a lawn with Aimee Finicky hovering over him. She's different: the "nice girl" who reads science fiction and doesn't have a boyfriend. While Amy has dreams of a future, Sutter lives in the impressive delusion of a spectacular now, yet somehow, they're drawn together. Written byProduction

The Spectacular Now (2013) Review by dirkdiggler051 from United States
The Spectacular Now is a surprisingly good film. The acting is greatfrom the two leads, as they make their characters extremely likable. This amazing, (and at times seemingly unscripted), acting keeps themature and occasionally dark screenplay from alienating viewers withit's harsh and unrelenting look at alcoholism. Several moments willhave you almost pitying the main characters, as one has a seriousdrinking problem that often gets the better of him, while the other isat times unreasonably kind and forgiving. These flawed characterselevate the film above a level of just average teenage drama and in toa superb melodrama. Shailene Woodley and Miles Teller both won awell-deserved award at Sundance for their great chemistry. The scriptreally gives these great characters a couple of brilliant scenes. They're all very well written and directed and get a lot of credit foravoiding the conventional scenes that every teenage movie in recentmemory has been chock full of. But, in the end, it all comes back tothat excellent dialog and chemistry between the two exceptional leads.I don't know if there are any Oscars coming, (although I would be justfine with that), but there will definitely be loads of accolades andcritical acclaim for these two outstanding actors.

The Spectacular Now (2013) Review by Justin Bell from United States
A high school romance between an alcoholic, party boy and a morereserved, shy, girl. This movie did an exceptional job of hittingreality. Everything about this movie was believable, and all the actorsfit their roles. This movie had a similar feel in style to Ruby Sparks,in that at the heart it was a romance, but there was a lot more too it.Family drama, fear of the future, alcohol, and even friend drama wereall in this, just like most teens experience.

In a Q&A afterwords an audience member asked why this was such aidealistic school, and why it didn't have any bullying and the truthis, because even though those exist, most schools don't have a seriousproblem with it.

Another audience member said they didn't recognize anyone in the movie, and that the lack of makeup made it feel more real. While the lack ofmakeup is true, this movie has quite the cast list.

The Spectacular Now (2013) Review by tbmforclasstsar from United States

It is really interesting to look at the history of high school moviesin cinema. The 80s and early 90s gave us Fast Times at Ridgemont High,Dazed and Confused,Ferris Bueller's Day Off and the John Hughesclassics like 16 Candles and The Breakfast Club; films that dove intothe sexuality, partying, and innocence of high school. The late 90s andearly 2000s brought on a wave of high school rom/com films like 10Things I Hate About You,Clueless, American Pie, Drive Me Crazy, Can'tHardly Wait, and She's All That, comedies that focused on the romanceaspects of high school, specifically dating and prom. The later 2000schanged again with Napoleon Dynamite, Juno, Superbad, Easy A, and MeanGirls, films that showed a much quirkier comedy side of high school andfocused more on popularity and the fears and consequences of bullying.

And with the past few years that have gone by, I feel as if the designof a good high school film has once again shifted. Sure, we still seefilms like Prom, Project X, and 21 Jump Street that fit past highschool forms, but I feel the focus on a lot of new films seems to bemoving towards an authentic representation of the high schoolexperience. While the crazy parties, overly sexualized youths, andCinderella-esque romance stories interested audiences for years, filmmakers seem to be moving in a direction of creating real, genuinecharacters for the audience to fall in love with. We saw this last yearwith The Perks of Being a Wallflower, a film that is full of quirk, romance, and youth drama, but created honest characters and a veryrealistic story.

Even more authentic than The Perks of Being a Wallflower (to the pointthat Perks looks hokey) comes James Ponsoldt's (Off the Black, Smashed)third feature film, The Spectacular Now. The film follows the life ofSutter (Miles Teller), a very popular and loved member of a high schoolsenior class that struggles with the reality of his high school yearscoming to an end. While Sutter may be the life of the party and acharismatic and fun person to be around, most of his classmates see himas nothing more than a out-going buddy at social events that isn'tgoing anywhere in life. When his girlfriend Cassidy (Brie Larson)breaks it off with him, Sutter turns to a night of drinking that endswith him passed out on the grass.

Enter Aimee (Shailene Woodley), who wakes Sutter up on her front lawnon her way to delivering papers on her mother's paper route. Sutterjoins Aimee on the news delivery ride and finds that she is incrediblyeasy to get along with and could be someone he might have a good timehanging out with. He invites Aimee to a party later that day and beforeyou know it, a relationship is formed. Full of high school innocenceand a strong chemistry, Sutter and Aimee make a great couple that iseasy for the audience to quickly fall in love with.

But Sutter's life is consistently eating away at him. Constantlydrinking booze, whether it be at school or on the job (alcoholism beingnothing foreign to a James Ponsoldt film) and wishing to meet hisfather that had separated with his mother when he was young, Sutter'srelationship with Aimee is the one thing that makes him happy day today. Even when his friend questions why he would be dating her, Sutterknows that there is a connection with Aimee that keeps him loving lifeand living in the moment; away from the oncoming train of graduation. But is the relationship the couple has strong enough to keep Sutteraway from his internal struggles and is Sutter willing to let Aimeecome along for the ride?
